Anyone who knows me is aware that Aziz and Cucher have played a huge role in my photographic development; I’m a huge fan of their Dystopia Series. Having said that the image above, from their “Interiors” Series, is what is currently piquing my interest… It’s so simple visually, but the idea blows my mind. I can almost feel the skin stairs beneath my feet as I walk through this living building.

In 1984 Calle was commissioned to photograph Japanese culture. The trip lasted for 92 days, and at the end she was meant to meet her lover in New Delhi. He failed to show.
As a means of assuaging the heartbreak and pain caused by his sudden abandonment Calle produced “Douleur Exquise”, a chronicle of not only her ill-fated trip but also a collection of stories collected from others back in France, whereby she asked them to share their most painful experiences with her.
Through this process of sharing and artistic venting Calle eventually began to feel that her pain was alleviated. However, despite this, the book that was created as a result is a poignant reminder of how our actions can affect the lives of others. Each page is dripping with regret, with the wonderful photographs of Japan defaced by a large rubber stamp, counting down the days until Calle’s lover left her.
This book is still, to this day, one of the most hauntingly beautiful objects I have ever had the good fortune to hold. This is a book that every dedicated Photographic artist should own, the quality alone is breathtaking. It can be purchased HERE at Amazon.fr.

from The Drag King Book
A photo from Del LaGrace Volcano’s “The Drag King Book” <3 Another photographer whose work I explored in my dissertation.

Yasumasa Morimura’s work has always fascinated me. Playing with concepts of cultural and gendered identity his work is expertly subversive in nature. I actually wrote my dissertation about his work and the way that he explores concepts of western beauty and femininity from an eastern male’s perspective.

Daniel Lee has been compositing images of animals and people together for years in his “Manimals” project, calling in to question not only the very nature of humanity but also the matieriality of the digital image. His work blows my mind.

He has always been my favourite photographer. Giving some love for Mr Bïyan <3
